The University of the Highlands and Islands covers an enormous area of Scotland - from the southern tip of Argyll to the north of Shetland (the same distance as Glasgow to Kent) and the natural capital available in the region is also vast and includes 61% of the Scottish coastline. The university is relevant to the large and small communities found in the region and to the considerable blue economy sectors on our doorstep. We offer a diverse range of lifelong learning opportunities and our research and knowledge exchange are valued by our stakeholders and economies. Our work is also impactful on societies locally and globally. We complement the outstanding natural capital with excellent built resources and facilities, technical infrastructure, and staffing. The university continues to be inspired by our seascapes, landscapes, culture, heritage, communities, and the economy of the highlands and islands. These are reflected in our strengths in environmental sciences, health, and humanities. The university strives to develop the blue economy in several areas including: Aquaculture Energy and Marine Renewables, Marine Mammals, Marine Biotechnology, Biology, Environmental Science, Analytical Services, Chemistry, Marine Spatial Planning, Policy, Mapping and Licencing, Oceanography, Social Science, Fisheries, Marine Tourism, Robotics Sensors, Doctoral Training and many more.
